HOW TO DETERMINE YOUR SKIN TONE
Finding your colour season and skin tone is not just about your skin and hair colour. There are many different factors that come into play when determining what your colour season and skin tone is.
There are two types of skin tones namely a skin with a yellow undertone and skin with a blue undertone.
All the colours on the left have will fall under the warm colour tone and have yellow undertones on the other hand all the colours on the right fall under the cool tones and have blue undertones.
1.1 Why should I know my skin tone?
Every skin tone has colours that suits it best and brings out better features than others colours do. In Fact some colours close to your face will give unwanted shadows on your face e.g. under your chin, eyes and nose. Once you know about it you will start to see it more clearly.
1.2 Why do we have yellow and blue skin tones?
The reason there are different skin tones is simply because over time, skin pigments will darken to absorb less light in hotter temperatures. The concentration of these pigments is what gives our skin its colour. The more pigment your skin has the darker our skin tone becomes. The same is applicable for Lighter skin tones, the less pigment you skin contains the lighter you r skin will be.
1.3 How do I determine my skin tone?
The first consideration in finding your skin tone is by determining your undertone. Is it cool, warm, clear or muted? To discover the undertone of your skin, dress in white or hold white paper up to your face. Make sure that your face is free of any makeup. In the most natural light possible, look at your skin. Yellow undertones indicate a warm undertone. Blue undertones are cool. Those with clear undertones have more of a translucent quality to their skin. People with muted undertones find their undertones are softer. Another TIP is to look at the veins in your arms. If your veins are Purple you have a blue undertone, if your veins are green you have a warm undertone.
Cool undertones
Cool undertones are a combo of reds and blues and generally go with skin tones that are rosy-pink, rosy-beige, dark olive, dark brown, or ebony. Women with cool undertones usually have blue, green, or black eyes. An interesting fact about cool undertones is that they tend to tan very easily.
Blue undertones: Cool
Summer- Cool and muted undertones
Winter- Cool and clear undertones
Warm undertones
Warm undertones are more yellow and red and go with skin tones of ivory, peach, golden brown, beige, coppery, or deep golden brown. Usually women with warm undertones have hazel, brown, or amber coloured eyes. Warm undertones, unlike cool undertones don’t tan easily but tend to burn. Your skin tone can be subdivided into four groups namely:
Yellow undertones: Warm
Spring- Warm and clear undertones
Autumn- Warm and muted undertones
1.4 Using your eye pattern to determine your skin tone
The second part of finding your colour season is to determine which eye pattern you have. This is a very interesting part of finding your colour season and requires you to discover something about your iris that you may have never noticed before. Each season has a characteristic eye pattern. The brighter the light in the place you are in, the easier it will be to see your eye pattern.
Winter = a spoke pattern
Autumn = an Aztec sun with swirls and spots
Summer = delicate cracked glass
Spring = a round sunburst
The combination of your hair eye colour will also help you in finding your skin tone as well:
Winter = Hair is black, dark brown, chestnut, lacking highlights. Eye colour tends to span the normal brown, blue,
hazel or Green.
Summer = Hair is without highlights and is typically ash blonde or ash brown. Eyes are blue, brown, green or hazel.
Spring = Hair is golden brown, blond or red and the eyes are blue, blue-grey, green or turquoise green.
Autumn = Hair is golden and brown, red, auburn or chestnut and eyes are dark brown, hazel or green.
One of the best ways of finding your colour season is to check out the personality traits of each season:
Winter = Loyalty, perfectionism, analytical, dependable, truthful and reserved.
Summer = Practical, neat, easy going, gentle, understanding, good listener.
Spring = Friendly, energetic, optimistic, curious, witty, smiling.
Autumn = self-discipline, confident, leader, organizer, dependable, loyal.
1.5 So now you that you have taken the steps necessary for finding your colour season, what colours should you wear?
Winter
Avoid earth tones. Richer, more intense colours like black, navy blue and red look good on winters. Icy blues and pinks will also compliment the winter colouring.
Summer
No intense colours. Powder blue, pink, and other pastels look good on those with summer colouring.
Spring
Do not wear dark colours. Better suited for spring colouring are peach, coral, aqua and ivory.
Autumn
Bright colours do not look good on autumns. Warm colours like beige, orange and brown work best with Autumn colouring.
